The province has built new secure custody facilities for youth in:
And has expanded an existing facility in:
Other existing facilities:
- Cobourg - Brookside Youth Centre
- Goderich - Bluewater Youth Centre
- Simcoe (town) - Sprucedale Youth Centre
- Sudbury - Cecil Facer Youth Centre
The centres:
- Provide services tailored to the individual needs of youth
- Allow youth to serve their sentences close to their home, family and community
- Help reduce the chances that youth who are in conflict with the law will re-offend.
Youth must be in secure custody if:
- A judge orders they be detained after getting charged with a crime, either before
or during a trial, or
- They are serving a secure custody sentence after being found guilty of an offence.
Each facility provides programs focused on addressing each youth’s individual strengths
and needs. Youth will be fully assessed and will receive a personal plan for education,
rehabilitation and counselling services.
The programs offered are tailored to the individual needs of youth. Programs include:
- Life skills and self management
- Decision making and problem solving
- Victim awareness
