The Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services has two types of custody and detention centres serving youth. Some are directly operated by the ministry and others are run by community agencies.

The Youth Justice Division operates five Youth Centres across Ontario. They provide rehabilitative programming and reintegration services within a secure environment to young persons in conflict with the law.

These secure custody/detention facilities accommodate young people who are ages 12 to 17 (at the time of the offence) and who are being detained or serving sentences.

Ministry-run Youth Centres are located in:

Northern Ontario

Western Ontario

Central Ontario

The ministry recruits people for positions in directly operated Youth Centres. To be eligible for employment as a Youth Services Officer, the following is required:

  1. commitment to working with young people in conflict with the law
    1. successful completion of post-secondary education from a college or university or recognized standing in a related field with emphasis in social/human services, behaviour management, adolescent development and knowledge of family group dynamics
    2. one year of recent relevant work experience


    3. a recognized secondary school diploma with supplementary courses in human behaviour
    4. three years of recent relevant work experience
  2. eligible to work in Canada
  3. experience in working with youth (paid or volunteer)
  4. current Emergency First Aid and CPR/AED Heartsaver Certificates

Other requirements included in the recruitment and hiring process are:

If successful through the application, testing, and interview process, an applicant may be offered an opportunity to attend a five-week pre-employment training program which is required for employment.
